Pencil Impression of a Bobwhite Quail

A simple impression sketch drawing prior to painting.

Drawing has always been one of my favorite mediums in the world of art.  This is where my art journey began and where I discovered a sense of goodness in bringing a piece of blank paper to life.

I spent hours drawing and slowly shading across clean paper.  It always felt good and for a while I have been wanting to get back to it, even it was just for myself.

This pencil impression of a bobwhite became part of a 2026 new beginning.  I raised these quail for meat and release when we lived on our family farm.

It was an incredible journey and where my book, Ground Raised Quail was rooted.

I spent hours studying these birds and since I can't raise them here in the swamp, I thought the next best thing was to paint them.

Watercolor can sometimes be a challenge, and I wasn't quite sure what the setting would look like so I decided sketching first might be a good place to begin.

Reconnecting with the paper was simply the best.  I started with some details but then moved on with a lighter impression that was softer.

The best part of this drawing, I was flooded with memories, good ones and the feeling of being grounded and focused resurfaced.

I just wanted to keep drawing, so I did...

This piece is nothing more than a pencil impression of a male bobwhite quail and it felt amazing to reconnect with an activity that brought me a lot of joy.

I do miss raising quail so being able to draw and paint them is the next best thing.

Never think that you can't enjoy something you once did in a completely different way.  Drawing quail and following up in watercolor might become one of my new favorite art topics.

Encouraging Goodness,
Carole West
