A Bookshelf with Many Stories

Adding finishing touches on a custom-built bookshelf

Since the day I met Robert the one thing that immediately caught my attention was his collection of books. Which means we have always had a bookshelf in our home and these shelves have always had a way of telling a story.

So, when planning our home, we knew there would be another bookshelf.  Something we would build but I did not want another traditional shelf. I wanted something unique that continued to tell a story.

Across the board, this home has been a custom build project and creating a neat focal point between two rooms just made sense.

THe steps to make our custom build bookshelf.

So, I did some browsing through Pinterest and didn’t really find anything that I liked. Everything was pretty traditional; except for a few ideas that inspired a sketch Robert would eventually build.

We have this teamwork thing going, he builds then I sand and stain. With this project, we did not agree on size, so he surprised me with a monster shelf with plenty of room to grow.

It took quite a bit of strength to lift it off the floor and thankfully he is a lot stronger than I. Together we did it and finished by connecting to the wall for additional support.

I've been looking at those blanks shelves for days and decided why not unpack the book boxes. Then I found some of our fossils, a few rocks and other gems that have been packed away for about 5 years.

This became quite the afternoon and I’m still working on getting everything placed correctly. Honestly this shelf was a lot less overwhelming when it was sitting empty and I'm not sure that I'm very good at decorating our home.

With many moves behind us I also discovered that some of our inventory has been misplaced or lost. This was heart crushing because my entire freelance writing career appears to be gone. I had saved every magazine I was published in and for the life of me I can’t find them.

It has been 24 hours since I came to this discovery and where a few tears of sadness fill my eyes, I also know that everything happens for a reason.  There are two more places I can look and if they're not found, I've decided that's okay.  I still have the files but it's just not the same.

This bookshelf will carry on many stories and it’s my hope the empty spaces will eventually be filled with additional memories and new inventory.
