For me watercolor painting is about getting in tune with the
present season and simply relaxing. I
normally paint in the afternoon after working outside; last week my attention
was centered on pumpkins.
Pumpkins are everywhere and I love this time of year. I smile when I see young moms in the grocery store putting a few into their cart. It takes me back and just seeing the excitement in their children’s eyes offers a little hope of goodness.
So back in my studio I started to mix colors and kept going back to shades of orange and green. This reminded me of a few months back when I painted a handful of pumpkin notecards.
Something in my heart was telling me to reach further than a blank card and move towards something bigger.
So that is just what I did…
I think too many times I try to rush the creative process
and most recently I have decided those days are behind me. If I only paint one or two pieces a month, I
am okay with it.
The idea that the creative process is about mass production in a world of mass production does not work for me. The process should be fun, it should be creative and like I mentioned earlier relaxing.
I like to think of the creative process as an expression that makes you think and feel something beyond what you see. That is the beauty of art, it takes you on a journey and it either grabs you or it does not.
So, my time in the studio last week was about just having fun with painting watercolor pumpkins. I would like to encourage you to add a little bit of pumpkin into your week.
Maybe that looks like a pumpkin latte, or perhaps a stroll through a pumpkin patch. Or maybe it is just sitting down and writing a poem about the beauty of pumpkins through the many shades of fall.
Be the good,
Carole
