For the month of June I have decided to spend almost every morning outdoors. I started this in April and then again in May until the rain picked up.
From a distance I witnessed a transformation between texture and color. It was inspiring, taking me on a path where I could collect my thoughts and feed my creative being.
I find nature is the heartbeat of truth. It tells our story, one that expresses where we have been and where we may go next.
Nature never lies and it just waits for us to stop what we are doing so we can connect. So for June our watercolor prompt will begin by spending time outdoors simply watching our environment.
Watching Nature
What I mean by "watching nature" is to just sit in a chair and relax. Take in what is moving, decaying and growing. You may also want to walk for further exploration or change sitting stations.
Take it all in for several mornings as the goal is to get in touch with where you live.
For me this time is mostly spent around the ponds where we are still digging. As these spaces grow in width and depth, we are greeted by all kinds of living creatures.
Some are welcomed with open arms, like the crane. I love watching them look for food, their attention to detail is precise and their depth of color is magnificent. Almost a velvet blue that stands out beautifully against all the green.
While they navigate, images in my head begin to form . I start to wonder if I could express their movement on paper and what colors would I select? Would they be true of just a little off for a deeper sense of being?
I think very little about technique because with watercolor I find one of my biggest obstacles is overthinking the process.
Loose and free form movement is what I try to bring to the table because it feels organic and good.
June Watercolor Prompt
So for June the watercolor prompt has a couple of steps. One being to observe nature, your environment where you live and connect. Don't try to sketch it, just take it in...
Then when you feel ready, paint because it will feel good. Not because you have to paint but because you want to release what is forming within.
Repeat this weekly and take note how painting from the heart brings peace within.
Encouraging Goodness,
Carole West
