Creating a Natural Christmas Wreath

Creating a natural Christmas Wreath

It's the first of December and my decorations consist of this wonderful natural wreath for the door. There is more to do in the decorating department, but this wreath has a neat story.

This story takes us back a few weeks when I decided to make a fall wreath from nature.

We enjoyed that project for a month and before moving on with the Christmas updates, I want to share how the original wreath held up outdoors.

Transforming a fall wreath into Christmas

The green weeds that we're hanging lost their color and the fall leaves faded to brown as they curled. Which was all great because for the first two weeks it looked like this before it began to transition.

But wait, look at the ribbon, it looks fresh like it was just glued in place.  Needless to say, I was really pleased with the results, after 4 weeks outdoors this wreath still looked good.

I was encouraged and began planning out the creative process for a natural Christmas wreath.

But first, I had to remove a couple things before adding fresh greens and some red.

What you will need to make this Christmas wreath

Christmas Wreath Supplies

A few Supplies are required to complete this project and hopefully you can take a walk-through nature to gather most of them.

I began by removing the hanging dried weeds to the left and everything else I kept in place.  If you are starting this project from scratch get phase one for fall here.

You will need the following additions:
    • One stem of artificial red berries (available at craft stores)
    • Fresh pine branches
    • Fresh peppermint bundles
    • Wire and wire cutters
    • Hot glue gun

Christmas Wreath Upgrades

After you remove the dried greens, add the fresh pine using hot glue around the left of the wreath.  You basically want to fill in the empty spaces to accent the dried pine that was previously glued in place.

The next step is to make fresh peppermint bundles.  We do this just as I did with the pine needles here.  We want to use "fresh" peppermint so it can dry in place and give that sort of shriveled appearance.

Finally, we add berry plugs with more hot glue for a pop of holiday color.

Making a Christmas wreath with natural materials

Rehang the wreath on the door when finished and enjoy for the rest of the month.

I had a lot of fun creating this natural Christmas wreath, bringing fresh and dried together with artificial berries is so easy and having a base to work from was fantastic.

These touch ups took me just a few minutes after a gathering walk in the garden to gathen.   If you make your own wreath from nature, I would love to see it just tag me on Instagram.

Be the good,
Carole
