It was finally time for me to get organized on storing seeds for the following growing season. I
harvested from summer through fall with the idea to decrease what I spend each year.
Seeds can quickly weaken if not stored correctly and I discovered this the hard way during our last move.
When life
gets busy it’s easy to place them in a drawer and get to it later, but I am
here to say that is a bad idea.
This year I have chosen to use canning jars for seed storage because these air-tight containers can be recycled from one season to the next.
Quart jars work great for seed packets; I use pint
and half pint jars for larger quantities.
A good example would be marigolds; I just kept harvesting. So, I placed all of them in
a smaller jar instead of first stuffing them into an envelope.
I guess you could also use peanut butter or mayonnaise jars, any recycled container that is airtight will work.
The goal is to decrease humidity so add a silica gel pack to the bottom of the jar before adding seed packets.
Silica gel packs can be purchased on Amazon here.
When the jars are filled, label each one and place in a climate-controlled
area. If you live in a warm or mild
climate you may want to place these seed jars in the fridge.
Using canning jars to store seeds is an easy gardening project and it took me less than 30 minutes to get this all together.
Now that these seeds are safety stored, I can get back to adding more raised
beds for spring planting.
Encouraging goodness,
