Our country garden has been quite the addition and
well worth the effort. I referenced this
space in my new book, Garden Up Green several times because I added some of these DIY projects.
I have been blown away by all this green and to say we have had a lot of rain this season would be an understatement. Rain is always welcome, but too much can cause problems.
We lost our peas early because of an aphid infestation and the plants started to mold. I will try again in the fall because normally the weather is less wet from July through September.
If I replant in a brighter area, we should experience a good harvest in the fall. I must say, living in a swampy humid area has forced me to not dwell on the obstacles, instead find solutions.
The arch vines were added just for texture because I found them while clearing land. Later I realized they were muscadine but that is a story for another time.
Regardless of weather conditions this raised bed garden has been easy to maintain. We water from the pond but with all the rain there hasn't been much of that to do.
We have been experiencing simple harvesting for things like herbs,
cucumbers and lettuce. I would say that feeling blessed comes naturally and the process of drying fresh herbs has already begun.
In another month, cantaloupe, watermelon, broccoli and tomatoes will also be ready for gathering. There are several other things coming along which has made all this effort worthwhile.
Additional surprises are planted about and there will be more to come later. I planted such a variety this year and hope to try and break some of this down in the next few months.
In addition to the food, I planted a combination of cut flowers. Many are just beginning to bloom and that
means the butterflies and hummingbirds are visiting.
The floral annuals are enjoyable, but I have been looking into expanding with perennials and bulbs in the future. When my Casa Blanca lilies started to bloom all, I could think of was I wanted more.
Mulching has also begun but with all this rain it has been a slow process. I decided pine needles will be our cover resource once again. I am a believer in using what is already available.
So, our country garden is definitely growing goodness, and this might be the best planting season yet. Which means I am completely inspired to begin stage two in addition to fall planting.
Before I close there is one question I have to ask, "how would you like to have a garden like this?"
Did you know I can help you from the comfort of your backyard with my new book, Garden Up Green. It's never too late or early to learn how to establish a healthy raised bed garden.
Be the good,
Carole West
