Last week was another cold one here in the Piney Woods. I
had a list of things ready to accomplish because when these cold patches
arrive, I make sure to stay busy. This
helps me stay positive, keep time moving in addition to staying warm.
One of those projects began with starting seeds. If you have read my new book, you know this is not one of my favorite garden activities. I am more of a direct seed planter for multiple reasons.
I will say if you have good new seeds, it does make the process more exciting. I made my purchases early this year and then a second purchase came last week specifically for direct germination.
Purchasing Seeds & Gathering Supplies
Purchasing seeds and gathering supplies can take time and there are many great options available. My favorite seed resources for food are Mary’s Heirloom Seeds and Grow Italian. Both offer high quality heirloom seeds for growing good food and as I write this the majority have already germinated five days later. Heirloom seeds offer the best nutritional value, and you can harvest seeds at the end of each growing season.
Finding seed starting supplies can be a little tricky, so I like to see what is available in the marketplace. I am a visual hands-on person so making these purchases can be a hit or miss if I cannot see them.
This year I went back to my favorite paper containers with a reusable tray and cover. Replacing those paper containers is no big deal and the trays will work again with peat pods or recycled containers so for me this was a good option.
Like I mention in my book, cookie sheets or glass trays are another great option, they are sturdier and do an excellent job for catching water to keep pods from drying out.
Reuseable Pots - I just ordered these!
I will admit it felt good to begin seeds indoors while I
wait for the temperatures to warm up. If you are ready to garden or want to grow just a few
vegetables this spring and summer let me recommend my new book, Garden Up Green.
This book is your complete guide to raised bed gardening and
there is a segment on germinating seeds. Growing goodness begins with the desire and a solid foundation, gardening is not something you can just whip up and hope for the best, it takes effort.
When that effort and your hard work has been put into action then you start with good seeds. If you have any additional questions on this topic, feel free to reach out.
